What Distance From Work Reveals About Leadership
As summer deepens, a different kind of distance often begins to appear.
Not necessarily distance from work itself, but distance from the intensity and rhythm that have shaped the year so far.
For some, this period brings a different rhythm altogether. Schools close, routines change and the balance between professional responsibility and home life can suddenly require far more conscious navigation. For others, even a short period away from the usual pace creates enough breathing room to notice things differently.
And that distance can be revealing.
Things that once felt urgent begin to look less significant. Decisions made earlier in the year can now be revisited with greater clarity. Patterns become easier to recognise when we are no longer completely inside them.
One leader I worked with described realising during a short period away from work that the pressures consuming most of their attention earlier in the year no longer looked quite as important once there was enough distance to think clearly again. What surprised them most was not the workload itself, but how long they had been carrying certain responsibilities without questioning whether they still needed to.
That awareness did not immediately change everything.
But it did change how they wanted to move forward.
Sometimes the value of distance is not that it instantly provides answers, but that it allows us to see more honestly what the pace of life may have prevented us from noticing earlier.
As summer creates greater distance from the opening months of the year, it may be useful to consider:
• What looks different to me now compared to earlier in the year?
• Which responsibilities still genuinely deserve my energy and attention?
• What may no longer need to be carried forward into the next phase?
• What have I learned about how pressure affects the way I think, lead and live?
Sometimes clarity appears not because life suddenly changes, but because we finally create enough distance to see it properly.
If this period is creating moments of reflection, recalibration or perspective, it may be worth considering how those insights shape the months ahead.

Because sometimes it is only when we step back from the pace,
that we realise what we have been carrying for too long.
